A LICENSING LAW POINT. WASTE LANDS MANAGEMENT. WATERWORKS SCHEME. June 13. An application was made to the Supreme Court, to-day, for a license, which the Court at Kaipara refused to grant, on the ground that the place is outside their jurisdiction. The Judge said every license granted by the Court outside its jurisdiction was void. The Waste Lands Board has resolved to ask the Government to hand over 183,000 acres near the southern boundary of the Auckland Provincial District. A petition from the Tauranga settlers, requesting that 4000 acres should be granted on the deferred payment system will be granted when the land has been transferred to the Board. Sixteen similar applications have been received. A schedule of the confiscated lands has been sent to Wellington, and it is expected that the lands will be shortly handed over to the Board. A letter from the Secretary for Crown Lands approved of the sale, with certain modifications of the land, to Mr. Vesey Stewart, for special settlement. Captain Young arrived from Rotorangi to superintend the erection of an oil mill to crush cobra here, instead of transhipping it to Eiiylcvm.l. A Volunteer Artillery Corps is to be established at Onehunga. The funeral of Pilling was largely attended to-day. At a meeting of the City Council, a letter from the Town Clerk of Christchurch expressed dissatisfaction at the method employed by the Government in deducting portions of the subsidy for charitable purposes, and proposed a meeting of delegates at Wellington. Mr. Carrington has been appointed Consulting Engineer for the Waterworks, at a salary of Ll5O per annum. A letter was read from the Colonial Secretary, saying that the Government would forward a Bill for making the loan of L 25,000 authorised for completing the Waterworks a second charge on the special rate to be levied under the Act of 1876, if the said Bill is prepared by the Council, and laid before the House.
