OAMARU SCHOOLS COMMITTEE.

A special meeting of the Committee was held yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock. There were present—Messrs. Gibbs (in the chair), Barclay, Lidclle, Sumpter, Clowes, and Falconer. Mr. Thornton, Eector of the Grammar School, was also present. FREE EDUCATION. An application from Mrs. Esther Hastings, a widow, for free education for two children, was referred to the Yisiting Committee to report upon. THE SOUTH SCHOOL.

A letter was read from Mr. J. Hice, Master of the South School, stating that, as there were now 76 children on the roll, it would be of advantage to the school to have another teacher. He suggested that a female teacher should be appointed, in order that sewing might be taught to the girls attending the school. After discussion, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr. Liddle, seconded by Mr. Sumpter, " That Miss King (one of the pupil teachers in the Grammar School) be temporarily appointed to assist Mr. Bice in the South School, and that the Secretary to the Education Board be written to informing him that in all probability a mistress will be required for the South School after the vacation."

It v/as also resolved, " That application be made to the Education Board to constitute the South School a Main School, the average attendance to be sent, and any other information the Board may require." WINTER VACATION. It was decided that the winter vacation should commence on Monday, the 28th hist., and terminate a fortnight after that date. ACCOUNTS. A number of accounts were passed for payment. The meeting then terminated.
