CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held to-day. The Chairman remarked on one or two subject g mentioned in the report. Referring especially to railway communication an d the gap between Balclutha and Clinton, some of their members thought this line could be commenced and finished within six months, and the best thing to do would be to bring all their influence to bear on their representatives in the Assembly, so that the latter might call upon the Government to iill up the gap with all possible speed. The Chamber was undoubtedly at present in a sickly state, but there was no reason that it should be so, and it coull be made a power for good if its members chose to in the proper direction ; but certainly of be done away with. Dunedin merchants should not be satisfied with the interprovincial trade, and he hoped that the day was not far off when they would extend their ramifications to the neighbouring groups of islands, instead of their allowing, as now, New Caledonia produce to go to Melbourne. The balance-sheet, which showed an indebtedness of L 65 17s. lOd • to the treasurer, was adopted, the Chairman characterising it as a disgrace to themselves.
