It -will be observed by a special telegram from our Dunedin correspondent that the Taieri County Council is besfcu-ring itself in the matter of the railway into the interior. At its last meeting resolutions were passed affirming that the StrathTaieri route is the best, and that, failing *o get the line made by the Government,

power should be given to the County to construct it as far as the boundary of the County. Upon this matter the'opinion of the Maniatoto County Council is to be ascertained, doubtless with a view of finding out whether that body would be willing to undertake the work of constructing a portion of the line. There can be no doubt that the battle of the routes has now been fairly entered upon, and it behoves those entrusted with the care of the interests of this town and district to leave no stone unturned to obtain every information with regard to the route from Oamaru. We, therefore, trust that our County Council will follow the example set by that of the Taieri, by lending all the assistance in its power to the Railway Committee to further an object more calculated to benefit Oamaru and Ihe surrounding districts than any undertaking which has occupied the public mind for a considerable time past. If the present opportunity is allowed to pass by without a struggle, it may be j'ears before another chance occurs of giving the place a good start ahead in the march of progress which is at present taking place in the Colony.
