A GALE

Greymouth, May 26,

A heavy gale from the south-west, accompanied with a frightful squall and heavy rain, has prevailed here during the last 24 hours. The river 13 in high flood, but no damage has been done except to the sand gravel protective works, which are being partly swept out to sea, as anticipated by the river contractor. The tramway is partly under water, all the ballast being washed from under it. A slight flood in town is anticipated to-night.
