Constable Donovan deposed : I have known, the prisoner twelve months, during which time 1 have never known liim to work or do anything; to earn his living. Ho is continually loaling about from liotul to hotel in company with, drunken men. Mr.s White, grocer, in Tees-street, complained to me about the prisoner continually standing in front of her window. Boys used to gather about and throw stones at prisoner. On the- oth April last prisoner threw a stone through Mrs. White's window, for which offence he served n month's imprisonment. Last night lie was begging sixpence at tho 'Northern Hotel. lie sleeps in a shod down on the beach belonging to the Harbour Board. Constable Johnston gave corroborativo evidence regarding accused's habits. His Worship remanded prisoner till Monday, in order to see if he could not punish him in ;:ny other v;:iy than that of sending him to gaol, as he thought that was just what prisoner desired, viz., quarters in gaol during the winter months.
