FRIDAY, MAY 25, 1877.

The settling in connection with the steeplechases will take place this evening at the Empire Hotel. The regular fortnightly meeting of the Municipal Council will be held this evening, at 7.15 o'clock. Messrs. Fleming and Hedley will hold a sale of drapery at two o'clock to-morrow in the shop of Mr. H. Whelch. A meeting of the Committee appointed to carry out the resolutions passed at the late meeting in reference to the interior railway will be held to-morrow morning at 11 o'clock, at the Road Board Offices, Tyne-street. We are informed that a draught filly, 17 mon+hs old, by Prince of Wales, the proper ;, of Mr. T. Henderson, of Otepopo, changed hands yesterday at the handsome figure of 70 guineas. The purchasers were Messrs. Fleming and Hedley. It will be observed by an announcement elsewhere that the panorama of " The Mirror of England " will be on exhibition in the Masonic Hall for four nights during next week, commencing on Wednesday evening next. This panorama is highly spoken of, and is said to present a large number of striking pictures of various well-known scenes in the Old Country. The views of the river Thames are declared to -be real master-pieces of jointing. A ball in connection with the Thursday evening Quadrille Assembly was held in the Volunteer Hall last evening, and passed off in a highly satisfactory manner, the arrangements being very complete. There were thirty-five couples present, the whole of whom seemed thoroughly to enjoy themselves. The band consisted of Messrs. Earl (violin), Phelan (cornet), and Smith (piano), and, as -might be expected, the music was very good. Dancing was commenced at nine o'clock, and was kept up with great spirit until four o'clock this morning, when the company dispersed, highly pleased with their night's enjoyment. A scratch match at football was played on the Cricket Ground yesterday afternoon between sides chosen by Messrs. Ferens and Mickey. The game was played under the "Rugby Union Rules, in order to practise them as much as possible for the Dunedin match, which will probably be played under those rules. The new colours of the Club, viz., yellow and black, was worn for the first time yesterday by a large number of the members, looking very conspicuous and easily distinguishable in a scrimmage. Play was kept up with great spirit by those playing for about two hours, during which time several of the members showed great improvement in their play. The game resulted in a victory for Hickey's side, they securing two goals to their opponents' one. A scratch match will be played to-morrow afternoon, at half-past two o'clock.
