THE STEEPLECHASES.

Our reporter having been compelled to leave the course yesterday, before the con- | elusion of the programme, owing to the exigencies of the press, we were unable to give an account of the whole of the day's steeplechasing. The conclusion of the racing is briefly told as follows : Consolation Handicap—Of 30 sovs. About 2 miles. For all losers during the meeting. Over same course as the Maiden. Nomination, 1 sov. ; acceptance, 1 sov., to go to second norse. Jlr. James Mining's "Will-if-I-can, 5 yrs., 10st. 71b (Joyce) 1 Jin T. M'Kay's ch g Banjo, aged, 12st. 71b (**'• Hedge) 2 Mr S. Hoskias' br m Brunette, aged, list >. (Kelly) 3 A fair start was effected, Will-if-1-can at once assuming the lead, with the others close up. For the iirst mile all the horses kept well together, the jumps being taken in good style ; but Brunette then retired, and Banjo's weight proved too much for him, as he fell to the rear, and Will-if-I-can won pretty easily. This brought the programme to a close, and a start was made for the town. We omitted to mention yesterday that a detachment of.police, under Sub-Inspector Smith, was on the ground, but, with the exception of one little pugilistic encounter, winch was soon put a stop to, there was little call for their services.
