SEPARATION.
In the Divorce Court, Mr. Chapman applied for a decree* nisi on behalf of Jessie A. Tong, wife of John A. Tong, on the ground of cruelty. The evidence, taken by commission, gave instances of adultery on the part of respondent at Dunedin. The cruelty consisted in A. Tong taking his wife into their bedroom at Alexandra, and giving her three slaps in the face, because some man had been chaffing her while at dinner in the hotel. Upon another occasion, when she did not get up early enough to please him, he dragged her out of bed and kicked her in the body while she was pregnant. After petitioner had accounted to the Bench for all the times she had left her husband, a decree nisi was granted on the usual terms, to be made absolute at the next sitting of the full Court.
