A special meeting of the Municipal Council was held this morning for the purpose of considering the tenders for additions to the Gas Works. There present—His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Mainland, Headland, Morton, Gibbs, and Scott. The following tenders were opened :—John Barclay, LS4; Hamilton and Currie, LSI ; Robert Hewit, LBS ; John M'Combe, LlO9 ; Ritchie Young, LS2 19s. Sd. The tend rof Messrs. Hamilton and Currie was accepted. Permission was granted to Mr. James Patrick to make additions to his premises as requested. It was announced that a telegram had been received from the Hon. D. Eeid, intimating that the land applied for by the Corporation for Water Works purposes at Awamoko, had been granted by the Government. The* question of the Water Works debentures having been taken into consideration, ib was decided that they should date from the Ist of August, and should be for £IOO, and bearing interest at the rate of 7 per cent. His Worship the Mayor and Councillor Gibbs were appointed to make arrangements with some qualified person to conduct the land purchase negociations iu connection with the proposed water works. The meeting then terminated.

The canvassers for subscriptions in aid of the Steeplechases to be held on the Queen's Birthday are meeting with a considerable amount of encouragement. Already a very large sum has been promised, although only a portion of the town has been canvassed. The privileges in connection with the steeplechase meeting were sold to-day by Mr. A. H. Maude, when the following prices were realised :—No. 1 booth, Lll, W. Maitland ; No. 2, Lll, TV. Maitland ; Grand Stand, Lll, W. Maitland; saddling paddock, L 5. J. Cahill; baiting paddock, LI 45., J. Eeid ; gates, L 44 os., J. Eeid: cards, L2 195., J. Jennings; refreshment booth, Ll, J. Patrick. Total, LS7 Ss.

The Calcined Corkonians announce that they will give an entertainment at Otepopo on Monday evening next, in aid of the Mechanics' Institute of that township. The Corkonians have prepared a very good programme, and we think we are justified in saying that a treat is in store for the residents of Otepopo.

Tenders are called for the construction of the proposed public baths in Oamaru, and are receivable up to the Gth June.
