The Engineer reported upon the above in. detail, appending thereto a schedule showing the following as the complete result after correcting errors in addition and extension, viz. : Total Cost of Works. (Exclusive of pipes and pipe-laying.) £ s. d. A. Crawshaw, Dunedin ... 55,350 1G 4 Thornton and Bull, Christchurch ... ... ... 52,703 G 3 Allan and Stumbles, Oamaru 50,655 2 3 Pierce Lanigan, Auckland 49,890 9 0 D. Proudfoot and Co., Dunedin ... ... ... 47,659 10 9 Barclay and Co., Oamaru... 47,022 9 2 J. Henderson, Wellington 46,174 10 10 First Three Sections Only. For the Black Point, Awamoko, and Papakaio sections there was a much closer competition than for the fourth—the Lanrton section. The totals for the three lamed standing thus : £ s. d. A. Crawshaw ... ... 28,433 14 4 Thornton and 8u11... ... 27,787 8 5 Allan and Stumbles ... 26,602 8 1 Pierce Lanigan ... ... 24,787 4 0 Barclay and Co. ... ... 23,861 18 4 D. Proudfoot and Co. ... 23,059 10 9 J. Henderson ... ... 21,746 4 8 The Landon Section. TI • C.-iincil, at its last meeting, de-ciih-'l "■< the whole of the tenders For Tin? Latiu .>n contract, and call for fresh teuiU ; - s. These were now opened, with the following result:— £ s. d. Asliworth Crawshaw ... 25,178 7 0 David Proudfoot ... ... 23,020 0 0 Allan and Stumbles ... 22,988 19 9 John Barclay ... ... 22,738 12 0 rhornton and 8u11... ... 22,286 2 1 Mark ham, Barclay, and Co. 21,272 8 6 Hugh Wallace 20,982 11 9 John Henderson ... ... 20,669 4 1 By adding the amounts for the four sections together (taking the new tender :or the Landon section), Mr. Henderson's renders are considerably lower than the others, the total amount being L 42,415 m. 9d. Taking the lowest tender for the pipes, that of Mr. J. Parks, L 18,319, and ;hafc of Messrs. M'Nab and Aimers for aying the pipes, L 1,930 53., it will thus ae seen that the total cost of the work ivould bo L 62,664 13s. 9d. A lengthy discussion took place in reference to the acceptance of the tenders. During the discussion, opinions appeared :o be pretty general that as the pipes nrould not be required for eighteen uontlts, it would be undesirable to order ;hem at once. Eventually the following resolutions were passed : " That, being advised by the Engineer that if the Water-works are constructed to the plans prepared by him, and adopted by the Council, there will, in addition to 1 domestic supply of ten gallons per head per diem for a population of 10,000 souls, je an available motive power for machinery of not less than 300 horse-power, ind seeing that the Engineer stakes his professional reputation on the correctness the foregoing, this Council, relying upon the foregoing estimate, is of opinion that the necessary expenditure will be wisely made, and will prove remunerative to the town, and therefore will proceed with the construction of the works." " That Mr. John Henderson's tender r or the four sections be accepted, subject ;o his supplying the ironwork necessary :or the Landon contract, as per the prices submitted in his tender for pipe supply." " That none of the tenders for pipe supply or pipe laying be accepted." The Council then adjourned.
