[from our own correspondents.] .. ♦— Dunedin, May 9. THE WHAKF RESERVES. The City Council intends petitioning Pai-liaiuent to re-vest wharf reserves in them. FEVER HOSPITAL. An agreement ha 3 been come to re the Fever Hospital. The Council pays all costs, and undertakes to remove the Hospital at the end of six months. THE UNIVERSITY. The University Council has declined Mr. Severn's application for the position of scientific lecturer, he promising to hand over his apparatus if appointed. Mr.
Macandrew, at the meeting, brought down several important resolutions for consideration at the next meeting, the firafc?of Chancellor to officid <: vaeWA>era qfjhe Gquncil, ,3nd for calling competitive designs lor to costl&o,ooo. ,'J. resolutions., are follqw :—"ln ./the, opinion of the Council, the future general welfare of the country depends much \ipqn the diffusing of sound learning of the highest class,, to which end. the advancement, in connection with the University, of as many scholarships as possible would be greatly conducive. It is there* fore. ; resolved that LIOOO a year be set aside out of the funds of the University toward* this object, and that the Professorial Board be requested to indicate its opinion as to the terms and conditions upon which the money can be best ap. plied." " The Council desires to express its earnest hope that many of those who have acquired large means in the country may be induced to devote a portion thereof towards endowments of scholarships in the University; and further* that, with a view of bringing permanently under the notice of the people of Otago the fact that arrangements have been made within the Province whereby University education may be acquired by, and is open to, all who may avail themselves of such provision, copies of the University calendar, together with such regulations for the acquisition of scholarships as may be adopted under the foregoing resolutions, be transmitted to the individual members of all corporate bodies and School Committees throughout Otago."
