Wo understand that another rise has taken place in the price of flour, which is now quoted at from £ls 10s. to £l6. These advances in the price of flour are owing to the news received by telegraph of a rise in wheat of something like 25 per cent, in the Home market. As a consequence of the advance in the pries of flour, bread has risen to 9.1 for the 41b. loaf. While these advances are matters of congratulation so far as the growers of wheat ,nd thepioducer3 of flour are concerned, they are anything but satisfactory to the consumers, amongst whom there is a very_considerable amount of growl-
A -writer in the Daily Times is very severe on the cricketers of the city, and says that cricket has improved, but little since the visit of Parr's team. He says that twenty different teams could be obtained in Melbourne, anyone of which would be more than a match for Dunedin's best. Speaking of the match with the England Eleven, the writer says that a one innings defeat was only avoided on sufferance, for had Shaw bowled, he would have made much shorter work of the team. The writer attributes the poorness of cricket in Otago to the want of good bowling, and says without it there cannot be good cricket. The usual monthly meeting of the Oamaru Mutual Benefit Ruilding Society, for the receipt of subscriptions, will be held tomorrow evening at the Secretary's office, instead of the Athenoeum, in accordance/with a resolution passed at the last annual meeting.
The monthly meeting of the Committee of the Horticultural Society will le held at Albion House this evening at 8 o'clock.
That Dr. E. H. Bakewell, of Dunedin and Trinidad, is a versatile individual, few who read the Dunedin papers will deny. That he is fond of thrusting himself prominently before the public gaze has long ere this been generally conceded. It is not surprising, therefore, to find that the outbreak of war between Turkey and llussia has been seized by him with avidity as a fitting opportunity of again airing his eloquence, and displacing the greatness of his knowledge upon worldly affairs. We observe by a paragraph in the Daily Times that a lecture, under the auspices of the St. Paul's Young Men's Association, is to be given by the ever-ready M.D, on "Recollections of the Crimean War of 185-1-55, and its bearing on the present crisis." As we are assured that the doctor was a Staff-Surgeon in that memorable campaign, the Crimea, it is just possible that he may this time be able to afford some useful information. The paragraphist adds th t "some appropriate songs will be given by well-known amateurs on the same occasion,' but he fails to add whether or not they are to be given in character ; neither does he say to say to what part of the lecture they will be appropriate.
