SELBY V. HIPE.

The following is the Aryus* report of the pedestrian match between Hipe and Selby, of the A.E.E. :

The 100 yards foot-race between Selby, of the All-England Eleven, and Hipc, a i Colonial runner, who has met with som \ success at inland sports, wa3 run on the M.C.C. ground yesterday afternoon, in the presence of about 600 spectators. The stake* were understood to be £SO a-side, added to a trophy. The betting seemed to be restricted to the lower orders of the betting fraternity and one or two niumber* of the All-England Eleven. Hipe had ; a number of friends at the acceptable odds of 3to 2. A start was not effected until nearly three-quarters of an hour had been wasted in discussions as to whether the : match should come off or be postponed. ; When the men appeared at the scratch it took nearly live minutes to get them oß'. ; Hipe objected to the enforcement of the salutary rule that the competitor who went over the mark before the proper : time should be put back a yard, and from I the number of fake start* which arose out of his uncontrollable eagerness, he | manifestly had objected with good reason. Several favourable opportunities to send the men off together were missed, however, by the starter, Mr. Hainmersley. i When the pistol was ultimately fired Hipe | managed to jump away with the lead of a I yard. Selby quickly recovered the lost ground, and went to the front ; the race then seemed all over, but at 70 yards Hipe resumed the lead, and won by two yards. The time, as taken by Mr. If. C Harrison, was tOAsee. The men ran on 1 opposite sides of a stretched rope. Selby : showed undoubted tleetness of foot, and ■ his inability to stay may be put down to insufficient training. Another match between the same runners has been anvnyml for Monday next, for £IOO and a trophy worth £'JO. The distance will be 120 yards. .
