It is situated in a hollow, surrounded by that magnificent tract of land fenwn as the Tables, which is familiar to all a* being the district where such extraordinary largo erops of wheat are grown. The opjniog ft' communication with Oamaru by rail will prove a great benefit to farmers living in this district, a* hitherto they had to pay a large price for the cartage of their produce into Oamaru. and they will save about s*> per cent, b/ tlte advantage of railway communication with our seaport town. Alter passing a ctmple of hours in a very agreeable manner a start was made for town, the return journey being accomplished iu a:i hour and a half.
A meeting of the Gamarn Cricket Club was held at the Northern Hotel on Saturday evening. -Mr. Lortofi was in the chair, and there were also p-csent —Messrs. Otternoii, Niehotls. G. I. Millington, F. Femvick, J. Mittington. and Smith (secretary). Two offers of pieces of land for a cricket ground were considered. and after dtscassiou it was decided to accept that of Mr. Proctor for six acres situated about half-a-mile beyond the North Town licit. Messrs. Sun>ptcr, Fenwick, Xtuotfs, O. I. Milling ton, and JJoriou were appointed a sub-committc-i to make the necessary arrangement.! in reference to the leasing of the laud. It having been arranged that the committee should msct on Tuesday, the meeting terminated. The fourth anniversary of the Oaniaru branch of the 11. A. Catholic Benefit Society will be celebrated this evening by a supper and ball, to be held in Mr. J. Cogvin's Assembly lloom. Daucing will commence at hall-past 10 o'clock. The raec-horses Fishhook and Eclipse arrived from Moeraki by tha early train this morning. Mr. Campbell s horse Duutroon id jo arr. ved to day from Maercwheuua. Wc have heard it stated, on what authority we do not know, that there is no probability of Cloth of Gold coming to Oamaru.
TYc would remind owiwra of horses that | acceptances for the various handicaps close to-morrow evening. A meeting of the Committee of the North Otago Horticultural Society will be held this evening, at 8 o'clock, at Albion House. A meeting of the Oamara School Committee will be held this evening at 7.30 o'clock at the Secretary's office. On Wednesday Mr. A. H. Maude will offer the Hon. R. Campbell's horse Duntroon for sale with his engagements. A meeting of the Finst Oamaru Permanent Building Society, for the receipt of subscriptions, will be held at the Society's office tomorrow evening at the nsnal hour." To day being Easter Monday, a large number of persons indulged in a holiday. In consequence the railway trains both north and sonth met with a large amount of patronnge from holiday-makers. The monthly firing of the North Otago Hi lie Association for the present month will take place on Saturday next. The ranges will be 210 and 500 yards, seven shots at each : Wimbledon targets. The first squad will tire at G o'clock in the morning, and the second at 3 in the afternoon. A temperance demonstration on a large «ca!e took place at Waimatc to-day, and was attended by a large number of Good Templars from other places. The first train for Waimatc took a larcre number of visitors from Otmarn, including the Caledonian Band, who were specially engaged to enliven the Droccedinc? with their mu-ical strains. It will be seen by an advertisement in another portion of our present is*ue that Mr. If. A. Severn will deliver a lecture in the Masonic Hall to-morrow evening on "The Fartli and It's Satelitc " Mr. Severn's lectures are IrgMy spoken of by the Pi ess in rthrr portions of the Colony, and we h vc | no »lon!>t tiie will meet with the ; support bis talents entitle him to rcceiv. I The Diiihj Time*, writing on the subject :of the man on the island in tli3 aitaki, has i the following pcriinont remarks : —" One : ttti-i.r M very clear, and that is that many of ! thu-e who s>w the unfortunate man making ' signals had < ititer great want of thought, or an alsencc of feeling* of humanity.
The Waimnte people are in want of a !virtier. The Tr'Jmm says " Th« want of a ton.wria! artist is much felt i artel we are convinced that if a properlyr|tt«!t£ted and cleanly man were to settle e|e>wn in tins place, he would receive gooil support." The Dnrre lUrall referring to the report that it had been fotmd nece-sary to shoot the horse Tli-ht Bower, who dislocated his shoulder whi!c running for the Pttncuin Cup. ? ay.t: —" l;ij;ht Bower is now in his owners i stable itere ; ati.l although, in all probability, his own racing «laj*3 are done, his future progeny are yet likely to take their place in ifisttv a racing contest, as Mr. Coombe purposes placing him for stud purposes." A Thames contemporary says the following medical certificate was presented at a f.ood Templars' T.oilge the other night in vindication of a charge preferred against a member of breach of his Templar obligation : —"I certify that tried to kerp his spirits up by pouring spirits down at mv in-ligation, ami to replenish his store of animal heat while in cold water by mixing said water with alcohol in the shape of P. 8., also at my instigation, also to add to his exhausted strength by the same means.—Martin 11. Paynd." The Itotomahana natives (says the Poverty Buy Herald) are by no means behind the rest of their kinsmen in looking after the main chance, 33 the following copy of a handbill posted up and distributed in that district will testify "To the Europeans who visit Ilotomahana ; who photograph at that place. They arc to give Hoani Kahutaka five pounds (£."»). Should they not con- ; sent to pay this money they must cease photographing at Rotomahana. The reason that this arrangement is determined on is thai they will receive a great deal of money for their photographs when exhibited for sale. Also, let writing names on the Terraces cease.—From Xa Te Matexga 1E Jlanu, Na Maici Waikcra, Na Himiona TE Kura."
Windy Wellington ! The Wellington Po*t says :—'"A man named William Henderson, while standing on the breastwork near the Telegraph Office the other day, was literally b'own into the sea. The water was very rough, and as Henderson could not swim it would probably have gone hard with him had not a Maori, who had witnessed the accident, jumped in and hauled liim out. The Maori's action wa3 in the highest degree commendable, and men have been presented with the Humane Society's medal for less heroic deeds."
Saturday's Guardian supplies the following :—" A nurse girl named Jessie Allan was the victim of a painful accident yesterday afternoon. She was standing with some children on the bridge at Logan's Point when blasting was taking place at the quarry about 50 yards away, and a large piece of rock was hurled with great force to the spot where she was standing, striking lier on the left ankle joint. She was taken away in hysterics, and her condition is very critical. Can such things be ? The Rangiora Standard has the following, but it cannot be t rue : —"lt is a remarkable coincidence, which shows how well nature does balance things in this sub-lunary plant, that while the editor of the Licensed Victuallers' Gaze.tie is, and has for years past, been a strict teetotaller, the editor of the Good Templars organ, the 'Temperance Times, has always taken, and still continues to take, his liquor freely. Hcnca, probably, the moderate and courteous tone in which each brother of the quill attacks the other. Things would be different if they exchanged places."
The Mount Ida Chronicle has the following :—"ln an amusing leader our Dunstan contemporary is grieved that nobody in Maniototo will have a vote because no County roll has been prepared. Let him grieve no longer. If he studies the Counties Act a little he will find that in non-constitu-ting Counties elections are conducted as first elections. As we do not auticipate that any three Maniototo councillors will resign in disgust, and they have all strong constitutions, the point is immaterial. Curiously enough Mr. Pyke made this statement at the Council board. If Mr. Pyke is going to revise leading articles for Clyde, edit the Cromicell Argus, and act as County barrister at Blacks, his- salary should be raised. In the name of fair play let not 'Vincent accept all these services for £4OO a-ycar."
"A lunatic" thus de-cii'es "the noble game "as played at Kumara : —"They (the Kumarites) have a fairground alongside the river, and a great number were 'at work ' when we passed. Green said: '1 hey have a peculiar style of playing here.' Sides had evidently been picked, and the game seemed intensely interesti'g to all. Of the eleven in the fi.hl, six were smoking, two reclining against stumps, one bowling, one the wicket-keeper, I presume—standing with his back t.» the wickets, and other two looking listl-.ssly on. After a dozen balls had bi.eu delivered, the batsman at length list one, and then followed the most txciling scene I have ever witnessed. The six smoking smoked still, the wicliet-kee] er looked on in litter amazement, the bowler held out his hands as if about to fly into mid air, the two reclined against stumps as of vore, and one of the others went after the ball with slow, steady, measured, and mnjestic strides. The batsmen's eyes became filled with fire as they likewise proudly aiul majestically marched and counter-marched until the arrival of the ball."
