A WIFE BEATER.
Auckland, March 22. At the Court yesterday a man named John M'Graih. was charged with brutally assaulting his wife. ,The offender, who is a shoemaker, is a recent arrival, having come to Auckland in the Jessie Osborne. It seems, on St. Patrick's Day, the accused, being i-i a state of intoxication, went home and began beating his wife. The -ie: : --hbours, hearing cries'of " Murder" and . heavy blows, went for the police, and Sergeant O'Connor wenc at ones to the house. The door be'ng partly open, he at once walked in. The accused at the time had his wife down, and was beating her over the head and f;ice in n. savago manner with a heavy stick, and had not the police arrived when they did, t>ere is little doubt that he would have killed her. The police had great difficulty in removing the prisoner t>> the lock-up. The poor ivom.'ui is in a moot critical state. Her body Id ono mass of bruises, and she cannot see out of her eyes. Fears are entertained for her recovery, as, should erysipelas set in, death would- be. certain. •The hearing of the charge against H'Gr&th Wc.3 remanded, bail being refused. " ■
