TELEGRAMS.

[from our own correspondents.] Dunedin, March 17. TAIERI RACES. The Taieri races are postponed till the 26th, ostensibly on account of the weather, though it is now very fine. (From the Evening Star's Special Correspondents. ) Lawrence, March 16. SPORTS UP COUNTRY. A cricket match will be played on Saturday at Milton between the local club and the Bruce Club. Sports will be held here on the same day, and a concert and ball on Monday evening. DUNEDIN RACES. A large number of country people will go to Diinedin races ; some ?.re already gone. The weather is splendid. LAWRENCE RAILWAY. Mr. Blair, District Engineer, accompanied by Messrs. Bastings, Wain, and Dartnell, proceeded to Lawrence to-day to inspect the line, with a view to finally determine the date of opening. From Waitahuna they were conveyed on the contractor's engine, Lawrence being reached at a quarter to one. Fully two miles of ballasting has to be done. It is unlikely any alteration in the date fixed upon (April 2nd) will be made. The passenger station accommodation is utterly inadequate for the terininu3, being little superior to that at Monnt-Stewarfc. Although the whole line is laid witu the much-abused Ibbotsen's patent clip, the running is quite as smooth as on the Port line. On the incline beyond Waitahuna 251b. rails have been kid. This afternoon Mr. J. C. Brown, M.H.R., drives the last spike into the railway sleepers. SCENE IN A COUNCIL. Wellington, March 15th. There was a scene in the City Council this evening over the Town Hall competitive designs. Councillor Dransfield accused the Mayor of having given an unfair and interested decision. The Mayor left the chair and withdrew from the room, but subsequently returned, when Mr. Dransfield, instead of retracting, placed his resignation in the Mayor's hands. CANTERBURY RAM FAIR. Christchurch, March 15. The Ram Fair to-day was a great success. There were 1744 rams entered, being double last year's number. The greater number of the rams were of a very high quality. Messrs. Sutton Brothers, Southland, the New Zealand .and Australian Land Company, Southland, and Dr. Webster, Oamaru, had a large number of entries. There were also some splendid merino rams from Ercildoun, Victoria. A much larger amount of business was done than last year. Mr. T. H. Murray, of Wairarapa, purchased a considerable number of Lincolns.
