OTAGO BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION.
ANNUAL MEETING, ■+, The annual meeting of the Benevolent Institution was held atDunedin on Thursday afternoon. In their report the Committee say that the amount of sickness and the number of deaths necessitating application to the committee for relief were much in excess of any former year. In ■ addition to supplies of food, the committee found it necessary to grant supplies of fuel to 76 families ; and clothing, blankets, boots, &c, to 18 families. Seven male adults, 15 female adults, and 35 children were assisted with passages to their friends in the Colony or beyond it. House-rent amounting in all to £622 Bs. 6d., was paid on account of 85 different families. A large proportion of the cases dealt with were those of persons who have come to the Colony within the last few years. In some instances the persons needing relief were quite unfit for Colonial life, and their failure here was simply what might have been foreseen. Others, , again, might have got on very well indeed but for their improvidence or their gross misconduct through drunkenness or otherwise. Indeed, so strongly did the committee feel this to be the ease that in some instances relief was granted with the utmost and solely on account
