A notification in the Gofrrnm»nt Gaz-tlr. j appoints the following places and day 3 for ■lhe holding of the District Court in the district of Thnaru and Oainaru on and after the Ist prox. :—At Timaru, at the Mechanics' Institute, for the despatch of civil business, on the first day of every mouth ; for the despatch of criminal business, on the Ist March and Ist September in each year. At Oatnarn, at the Resident Magistrate's Court House, for the despatch of civil business, on the seventh day of every mouth ; for the despatch of criminal business, on the 7th Match, 7th June, 7th September, and 7th December in each year. Provided that in case any of the days so fixed as aforesaid shall happen to be a Sunday or holiday, then the Court appointed for that day shall be holden on the first day thereafter not being a holiday. ; They do things in a strange manner in ; Wellington. The idea of a juryman being ! allowed to conduct himself in the way that j Mr. William Prideaux appears to have done !is quite incomprehensible. According to the j .1 ryw William Pridcanx is an argumentative S juryman. Prior to the proceedings in an inquest bsing open-d, lie interview.-d the j Coroner in the jury- room, and hrd an in- \ terenting little i-dkca-talkce with J)-.: John- ' ston on the whole subject of the jury law. t Disdaining any circumscribed limits, he I argued wildly and gen-rally upon the why and the wherefore, and spoke more particularly upon the wi dom of the Legislature in allowing the Coroner to charge a guinea fc?,

while he, m a juryman, got nothing. Dr. Johnston is md an cxeirablc man. He cahnly contemplated Mr. I'ri leaux'.s imposing tig'tve, and balanced his argument> on the

end of hU linger, a" it were. Presently if: struck the Dr. that FVi leans was a person of bibutotn tendencies rn I Sergeant Momg'rm was polit-ly. n-q'te-tel to superintend his m-v.-jnirnhj and c>:dr >\ hi; or.-tory. Xotwitlntandin r all thi» p ri leaux took his place a:no:;g;t the juryman, and put a number of

ntte. ; tioni t > C'.ptain < Jririt which l;u C-»vo-t'sr deehrel to be who'.'y irrelevant, and the int--m>L".?ivi was unceremoniously put an enlto, whereupon Mr. Prideaux. pulling out his pocket-book, took notes of the rest of the proceedings. A most distressing affair happened in Marlborough a few days ago. According to the local paper it appears that for some time some of the family of Mr. Jennins, of that place, have been suffering from warlet fever, and that the youngest child died. The sorrow this cp.uscd was the means of awakening a little boy eleven vears of .",ge. and Mr. Jennins went inio the room to console him, and to give him a drink. Unfortunately, in the excitement occasioned by Jus recent bereavement, he took up a bottle containing crude carbolic acid instead of a bottle containing porter. Some of the poison wa? poured in a mug and given to the I*o3' to drink, and he took a quantity estimated at two tablespoonfuls. The father then gave the mug to a little girl in the same room t<> drink from, when she detected it. Mr. Jennins, having discovered hb mistake, promptly applied such domestic antidotes as were at hand, and obtained medical assistance without delay. When the doctor arrived he found the child in convulsions, and he shortly after died. When the news became known a feeling of sympathy was generally shown towards the parents wiio were thus bereaved of two of their family in such a lamentable manner: and if anything can console them under the misfortune, they have the satisfaction of knowing that they have the heartfelt sympathy of ail those with whom they are acquainted.
