As wilt he seen by- annimeeuum-t «U' where, the Committee n( the Mechanic*' Institute have succeeded in enticing the services of Mr. Thomas- E'.raekeu. who has generously consented to deliver a (oetuH' on Thursday evening, the list of March. Th<» aubjeet chosen- by the lecturer is *" An evening with- Samuel Lover." during the delivery of whiolv ho will give extracts from, the works- of that well-known novels. WV uongratnlato the CWiuittfe'e in having aeuured the services of so able and talented a fcotiwer.- and f«?»l convinced that besides aiding so praiseworthy sin institution as the Mechanics', a genuine treat will bo afforded the public:. Dp. fc'iU'P repeated his entertainment for the fourth.time duringfche week t.u*t nhi-ht,. and at* though, the attendance was not siv good a* ow previous occasions, takenas a whole the programme was the best of the season. Amongst those who went upon the platform to be phrenologiealty examined were Mr. Wm. Conyers. Mr. Smith. Mr. nwineth. Mr. tnglis. Mr. Amos, and Councillor ttrave. We know thai; each and alt of the subject* were well pleased with the readings of their characters, for they heartily tawghed with the audience as the S>octor bid bare their weak spots, or eulogised their go"d i|ualities. The mesmeric portion was ako> a far greater success than usual', and one of the artists under the influence caused roars of Taitghter by tho insane- efforts- h;* made tobring musie out of a chair—improvised! into » fiddle,, with a billiard cue as a bow. Tonight will positively be the list night, and •hmtM en* wish- to. forget the tares of the wottti for » couple of hours., he need only vmit th« Masuniu Ela.lt to do so. It will fee seen by advertisement that the R«». Mr. Martinv lately from Scotland, wilt pmelfc in St* Piwtt's- Churidt to-morrow foreMen.
We received the following telegram laat evening from Mr. George DarreU, Dunedin : —"Please contradict the statement that Mrs. Scott-Sidiloiw appears with theDarrell's at Oamaora, or under Mr. DarreH's auspices. On the contrary, myself and wife appear in Oamaro shortly with a full company, in Shakcaperian pieces entirely." At the ahscp fair in Auckland a lock of wool and a lick of dog's hair wa3 taken round to- the gentlemen present, who were asked to decide which was which. Strange to say, out of about forty who examined the locks, only four were correct in their judgment of them. It is a very singular circumstance {nays the Dnncdtn Stnr) that exactly nine years ago the Rev. D. Borne, brother of the late Mr. .Robert Borne, who lo.it his life on Tuesday, nearly perished in attempting to save the same family from the same house. The lata Mr. Borrie, of Huntley, was 24 years of age. A legislator who made his mark—of what nature need not be said—in the House last session, appear* since lib return to have matte 'htnm'lf obnoxious to a member of the fair sex. From a recent issue of the Wab'tipn Mtttf we learn that at the local Police Court Margaret M'Kcan was charged with assaidtiw and beating Henry Mandere, and fined Cm., or in default to be imprisoned twentyfour hours. A charge against the same prisoner f»r breaking the windows of Mr. ManderV dwcUing-rVntse was withdrawn. An application was further made asking that the same prisoner bo bound over towards all Her Majesty's subjects, and Henry Mandeis in particular, but his Worship did not consider surtkiestt evidence ttad been productd. and he therefore dismissed the case.
