OAMARU HARBOR BOARD.
THIS DAY. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Board was held this afternoon, at the office, Harbor-street. Present—Messrs. Sumpier (chairman). Shrimski, Menlove, Steward, Headland, Meek, and Forrester (Secretary). The minutes of the previous meeting were read and conurmed, and the outward c-ii-iTspondence read and approved. A letter was read from Mr. Smith, Traffic Mairiger. stating that a complaint had been made by the foreman of the wharf, as to the numbev of boys and men who were in the habit of i'shing upon the wharf during working hours, to fhe irveat hindrance of the workmen and ua:.-.;.r to themselves. He asked that the Dmicd should lake some steps to prevent it. Unless some precautionary steps were I'a.kMi. the Department would not be answerable for any accident which might occur. .Sonic discussion took place upon the letter, Mr. Shrimski maintaining that the Board had no power to interfere in the matter, and pointing out that it was more than likely that those who frequented the wharf would look to their own safety. Mr. M;;ek held a different opinion, and was under the impression that the Board could prevent persons from going on to, or order them off, the wharf if they became a hindrance to the works. Ultimately, however, the following resolution was moved by Mr. Steward, and seconded by Mr. Shrimski —"That, as attention had been drawn to the matter, a notice board or boards be placet! on the wharf, at convenient and conspicuous places, cautioning persons visiting the Breakwater against hindering the work going on by getting in the way of the workmen, and that a copy of the resolution be forwarded to Mr. Smith." —Carried. [Left sitting.]
