At the Police Court this morning there wa» only one case ok for hearing, and owing tot the non-attendance of the parties eoncerned, it was not gone into. W« beg to» call the attention of oar readers to- the advertisement in our eottwns f the eleetiow of a new School Committee. The meeting; take* place at the S'ehoofhottse at ?.30> this evening. According to recent telegrams it is meat probable that the- incoming Sfaea mail will be- m Mty a week before- time, in which case fetter* by it may he expected here at the end of tnb week. We learn that to-morrow, Wednesday. and Thursday evenings will he set apart f»r" prayer, the meetings taking place at the Church, the Wealeyam Church. and the Tees-street flail respectively. Section* 7, block XV., in the Otepopo discomprising, about 2U» acres, will be open for afplication on Wednesday, the 3lst tost., at £1 per acre. Mr, Robert Mcfc was admitted and enrolled a* a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of New Zealand on the sth kst. by Hb Honor Judge Williams. "We would again remind ottr readers that letters for the Trisco mail must be posted before 6 a.ra. to-morrow, newspapers not being received'altcr 3 o'clock this evening. The holiday for the railway rmptwj«it will take place on Wednesday next. The programme promise* to be an attractive one, comprising a* it doe* an excursion to Moerafci by a train leaving here at 7 a.m., a piotac and sport* at that place, for which latter priaes of the value of £35 will be given sway. A start home will be made at 5.30 pun., audi an entertainment will be held in the Masonic Hall, which Mr. Longford has kindly placed at their disposal, to be followed by a ball. Mr. Earie, being caterer for the occasion, wiO doubtless give every Mtinfiwltion yesterday was unprecedently TBJI there was a breeze blowing! fHffyA«]| as it northward, it had the opposite *4tmSßfa&t!L About $
o'clock in the evening, however, it suddenly ttfcw round tht ©ugh the west into the south, blotting half a gale for some time, accompanied by almost an icy coldness, and then heavy rain fell, which continued almost withont intermission through the night. This* morning the aspaet of affairs was altogether changed, and in spite of a brilliant stm,. a cool breeze keep* the heat down.
Jena, the son of Nimshi, had the reputation of driving furiously. Whether his time over a mile course was ever taken is problematical, but wo would willingly "back" the charioteers of oar Hansoms to beat any that we have ever seen. They do not, we believe, earn vast wealth, but they certainly keep their horses En trim to earn anything from the tinnedtn Cup to an honorable repose and a marble grave-stone in the knackers yard.
We tinders tand that a race for £l3 a-sidc between two leeal peds is t«> be run at 7 o etocfc this evening. It will take place on the town boundary, the distance Iweing 600 yards.
We give the following from the Wmtmiyi Tritium" for what it is worth : "The Noble Hamjder.—That 'great" tragedian did not make his appearance, as advertised, in Waimate, -which was a y*v*«f pity : but the greater pity is that he has displayed no inclination 6t-> settle the debts he. or his agent, contracted here, "flits t* not the first time that the dishonorable members of the theatrical profession have left ' inquiring friends' behind them : bttt Pampier—the grand tragedian—has- excelled them all, inasmuch as the hall-keeper and bill-sticker are amongst fois/Mir'Jtvfif patrons and creditors."
