The Evening Mail.

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 8, 1876. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

♦ " Wonts" are thins*, and a >ir»;» of ink upon a tfi««she may pnxlace thai which mifeu thousandsttvintc." . -

We wijh t>> intimate to readers of The M.u:, that v»x* are mukirig arrangements for its delivery punctually every evening, and we would f*<«l •jUlrgstl by subscribers who in future may have any cause of which to complain, notifying the same to the office. Neil M "Cowan. whwe premises at the Old Wattaki Ferry were destroyed oo Saturday morning, was arretted last evening by Inspector {'render, of Timaru, on the charge of having u»atieii>u-dy canned the fire. At the Police Court this morning evidence was taken of a nature sufficient to warrant the remand astked for to Wat mate, and the accused wast handed over to the custody of the Inspector. t>» he brought up at that Court on nest Friday. We notice by a cable telegram that Watson, known as "Scone Watson "p-Has tk jaat found 1m equal in the person of » ped." named Applctt. The Champion Foot-race of 200 yards, which came otF in Sydney on Tuesday resulted in an easy victory for thc'latter. It will be remembered that Watson beat Frank Hewitt a short time back, the distance being the same aa the above; so there i 3 no doubt about Applett being a "flyer" in the full meaning of the word. A ncwaehente of settlement is propounded by a correspondent of the Sydney Morning JlenrltL He suggests that the Government should throw open all the lamta available for selection free of charge, and give to each 3eleetor single rations for a year, which woald cost the country £l6 17s. 2d. per man. In this way, tie thinks, population would be attracted, and expenditure on immigration avoided.

There are some gontlemea who are anxious to acquire the largest amount of credit with the smallest expenditure of trouble, and the '• Special Correspondent" of the Guardian in this town would seem to be one of the class. On Lwt Monday our reporter, with some con-

sidernble inconvenience, attended a meeting of the Municipal Council at which a replywas given to the invitation to send a representative to the Convention. In the Guardian of yesterday we find our report reproduced vrbilim et literatim, not, however, credited to the Mail, but " From Our Own Correspondent." Had the gentleman in question merely forwarded the resolution passed, there would have been nothing to take exception to ; but it is rather 100 cool to extract a report in {/(oho, and quietly foist it upon hi 3 employers as "Our Own. - ' Y\e have not the slightest objection to any journal making use of what appears in our columns if suitalls acknowledgment be given, but we certainly think that, as on this occasion the .scii.TOr.it done duty for the pen, it would have been more honest in the scribe to have commenced with—" The Mail of this evening has the following," &c. No doubt it was innocence of the usual conr.se adopted which led to the "mistake," but such obliviousness saves a deal of trouble to the possessor.

From the report of the Otspopo JEt>ad Board, which appears elsewhere, it will be seen that that body has determined to be represented to-day at the Convention through its Chairman (Mr. Aiulerssn), the expanses attendant thereon to be paid out of the funds of the Bmr.l. When the late Premier stated that during liis mission to England he did not pretend to be economical, lie, as it were, prepared the way for a little revelation with regard to a rather lavish expenditure of the public money; but we question it the widest range of imagination took in the full facts of the Ccise. Some figures of both interest and instruction to the taxpayers of this Colony are to he found in the report of the Public Accounts Committee, with reference to the cost to the Colony of Sir Julius Vogel's two missions to England : —"The Committee find that the total expense of the first mission amounted to £3,163 '2s. 6.1., as j er statement attached, exclusive of Sir Juiius Vogel's salary, which amounted to £633 17s. 9d. The Committee further find that the total expenses of the second minion amounted to £5,G40 9s. 7d., exclusive of S.r Juiius Yogel'a claim for a fiither sunt of £2,750, and also exclusive of .<io.Ju.ius Vog,-r., salary, which amounted to •£il,l"-J 16-*. id , and of the salary of his *ee:ctary. amniiniing to £.331 Os. 6'd. * We notice that it is contemplated to bring out the /V/,,r*'oa T.'i.ia as an eight-page weekly paper—the iorni in which it was started —in.-ite.'id of a bi-weekly, as at present. The Thiuit enjoyed the undisputed reputation of being by far the best edited and most interesting weekly journal in the Province, published out of Dunedin, and in its enlarged edition we have Utfclef cfoiifrfc it will maintain its past reputation. _ A meeting of the directors of the Caledonian Society was held at Procter's Hotel last evening. Present—Messrs. T. HayMackenzie (in the chair), Pi. L. Rule, J. Martin, J. Read, T. Pratt, D. Miller, H. Aitken, and E. Rowland. The application of Mr. .John Jennings for a loan of some of the til ting-poles, &c., for use at the forthcoming Carnival, was agreed to, guarantee for their safe return being given. A letter was received making application on the part of Thf. Evening Matj, Company for a share of the advertisements, ami it wa§ resolved that a share should be granted as applied for. A committee was then appointed, consisting of the following gentlemen, to bring up a report and balance-sheet -£or_ the adjourned annual meeting, to be held bn next Monday evening -.—Messrs. Rule, Hay - Mackenzie, Rowland, and Martin. 'A vote of thanks to the chair brought the proceedings to a close. The following description of a vi.-ifc to Cooktov.n is taken from a letter received by a gentleman in Melbourne : —" A stranger un.*fco.tainted with the many miseries of ' Cooktown, coming suddenly from the most ' populated part of the digging?, would think that the da}" of resurrection had arrived, all the men looking as and supernatural. You cannot find a middle conditioned man on the diggings, all being so thin ■ that their bones actually protrude through ; their skin ; in fact, although I have been in i the army, and almost every country in the ; world, i never came across such wretchedi looking people, nor ever lived in such a I -n-retched country as that north of Queensj land." |
