Among the six thousand entries for the South Kensington Loan Exhibition of Scientific Instruments are Babbage's famous calculating machine ; a Whitworfch gauge, capable of measuring a millionth of an inch ; the instruments used on the Great Eastern in laying the Atlantic cable ; the object glass used by Galileo when he discovered the satellites of Jupiter ; and two telescopes and telescopic mirrors made and used by Sir Wm. Herschel. The Westport Times says : —" There is a strange coincidence in the arrest of 0. E. Haughton. The arresting officer was Inspector Mallard. It is stated in well informed circles that the real name of the accused is also Mallard. Mr. Ball, of Newmarket, Auckland, is a good colonist. At a recent meeting, at. which he held forth, his remarks are introduced by two local papers with " Mr. Ball, the father of sixteen children," said so-and-so,,
