THE ESTIMATES, 1875-6.
We liave not yet received our 'copy of the 1875-6 estimates, so we' take the following summary from the " Otago Daily Times " :—" The vote for Attorney-Gene-ral (£1,000) is continued, and from our Wellington correspondent we learn that Mr. Harper is mentioned as the probable occupant of the office. While for interest and sinking fund under the Immigration and Public Works Acts the amount last year was £240,000; this year it i is £420,000. The total interest and sinking fund is £938,568, while for the previous j year it was £795,616. This year there is a superannuation allowance under the Supreme Court Judges Act Amendment Act, 1874, of £2,350. There is compensation under the Excise Act, New Zealand* Distillery Company £9,077, and W. J. Cawkwell and Co. £2,856. There is an increase of nearly £3,000 in the item for the Executive, and, a-new item of £1,850 for Inspector of Machinery. In the Legislative Council departments salaries last year amounting to £895 are this year proposed to be increased to £1,300. For " Bellamy's " this year £SOO is proposed. The Secretary of the Treasury, it is proposed, is to have his salary increased from £7OO to £BOO per year. Tn the Audit office a wholesale rise of salaries is contemplated ; in all, an increase of £BOO is proposed to be made, in the salaries of sixteen clerks. There is a proposed increase of £6OO for persons under the Coroners Act this year. In the Supreme Court department, while the Sheriff of Otago has a total salary of £SOO and the Registrar of £550, the Deputy-Registrar has only £2BO. There is an increase in the amount proposed for the Dunedin telegraphists, but the salaries are still exceedingly moderate."
