MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
THIS DAY. (Before T. W. Parker, Esq., R.M.) ABUSIVE LANGUAGE.
Peter Cartridge was charged, on the information of- John Wharton, with using certain provoking and abusive language towards him at Kakanui on the 27th ult. Mr. O'Meagher for complainant. From the evidence of informant, it appears that the defendant called him " a thief," " a rogue," and also added that he would " dig Mm out of his grave." He stated he gave him no cause for using this language, and that the defendant had on several former occasions used threatening words towards him. For fear of getting excited he walked away. William M'Gregor, a shepherd, and Alex. Wilson, a carpenter, both residing at Kakanui, gave corroborative evidence. , The defendant endeavoured to that he' had received provocation, but the' Bench expressed their opinion of the case by binding the defendant over in his own recognisance to keep the peace towards the complainant for a period of six months.
