A MURDEROUS MONSTER.
Thomas W. Piper, sexton of Warns avenue Church, who is under sentence i death for the mui'der of Mabel Young, in the belfry of the clrarch, has confesjel that he was the murderer of Bridget Land* gan in 1873, and that he was the principj in the mysterious and nearly fatal assail on Mary Tynet in this city nearly tin years ago. Piper said he had no » tive for these crimes, particularly the mo der of the child, and cannot understd how he came to commit them. Concen ing the murder of Mxbel Young, he saju " i took a bat from the lower room befrii or about the commancement of schoi with which to kill somebody. At thi time I carried it up into the auditorimi but diu-ing the session of the Sundaj school I took it from the auditorium n carried it up to the belfry. After the eld of school I came down stairs and opene the doors, then I went up again. I sen away some boys who were playing in I vestibule: After the boys had gone on and I was still in the vestibule, the litU girl came up stairs, and I induced hert go with me into the belfry. There 1 strnc her with the club two or three times, an she fell where the blood was found. Tin I picked her up and carried her bodyt the place where it was discovered." Hi confession of the murder of Bridget hi degan in 1873 was equally explicit. B said he was under the influence of whisij and opium, and deliberately prepared tin club to kill some one, and she was & first person he happened to meet. In addition to his confession of nvxM Piper declares that he had a mania l« burning buildings, and that on the 16ft* December, 1873, he fired Concord M and also attempted to burn a store on& night of the Landegan murder. He ate confesses that he made- a murderous » sault upon a girl named Sullivan.
