NORTH OTAGO HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The annual general meeting of the above Society was held last evening, in the Mechanics' Institute, Mr. W. J. Steward, Vice-President, occupying the chair. There were fifteen members present. A letter was read from Mr. G. Sumpter, apologising for his non-attendance through illness. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, after which the report and balance-sheet was read by the chairman, the latter showing that there were £6l 6s. to the credit of the Society, with outstanding liabilities to the extent of about £2O.

The Chairman remarked that he was sure all present would consider the report most satisfactory, and he trusted the efforts of all would be devoted to the best interests of the Society. On the motion of Mr. J. Falconer, seconded by Mr. Calder, it was resolved that the report and balance-sheet, as read, be adopted. Votes of thanks were passed to the Treasurer and Secretary for their services during the year. The Chairman said he had now a very pleasing duty to perform, viz., to present the Society's medals to the successful competitors for the past year. He congratulated the winners on the very great interest they had always evinced in connection with the operations of the Society, and wished them equal success in the future. W. H. Heywood, gardener to Mi". John Reid, Elderslie, was the successful competitor in the Gardeners' Class, taking no less than twenty-one prizes ; and Mathew Clydesdale in the Amateurs' Class,

securing eight prizes. He had now much pleasure informally presenting the medals, and. the recipients duly acknowledged the same. The Chairman intimated that the next business, to be considered would be the election of officers for the ensuing year. The following were duly elected.:—Mr. J. Lemon, President; Mr. W. J. Steward, Vice-President; Treasurer, Mr. Paterson; Secretary, Mr. Simpson ; Committeemen, Messrs. J. Falconer, Hartley, J. Main, Kidd, Earle, M'Laren, Clydesdale, and Hilliker.

A vote of thanks to the Chair terminated the proceedings.
