WAIAREKA ACCIDENT RELIEF FUND.
A meeting of subscribers to the above fund was held last evening at the Star and" Garter Hotel. The attendance was small, owing, 110 doubt, to the very unpropitious state .of the weather. Mr. John Main presided, and the Secretary read the following report: — "REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE.; '; " To be presented to the subscriber's at a meeting to be held on Thursday, 22nd June, IS7G : '' Subscribers will remember a meeting called by advertisement, held in the Yolunteer Hall, on the 26th May last, re Waiareka Railway Accident. "It was then and there proposed to raise a fund, to be called the Waiareka Accident Relief Fund. And to further- this object, a Committee of twenty-four Town and eighteen Country Members was appointed. Messrs. J. Lemon and C. Peach were elected secretaries, and W. H. Ronayne, treasurer. " At a meeting held on the following evening the town was divided into wards, and six of the town members were appointed to canvass in each. Subscription lists were forwarded to the country members, as well as to several firms in Dunedin.
" A Sub-Committee was appointed to inquire into the circumstances of the sufferers, and to give relief, if necessary, from funds in hand.
"On the 2nd June a meeting was held, at which a Sub-Committee was appointed to wait on the representative in Oamaru of the firm of W. D. Morrison..and Co., to ascertain what they were prepared to give/by-way of As soon, as Mr. Corm.ack came back from Duhedin r lie was waited'upSn, and your Committee carmot-Tjut express their apwhich they were receivecfcb-y-'that He stated, that Mr. Mowat /had -•aifflfority to put down
£SO for him specially, the other members of x his firm were equally sorry, and sympathised equally with him in the whole affair; the whole subscription should be in the name of the firm, and he had much pleasure in subscribing £2OO. This, we think, speaks for itself, and comment is unnecessary. " The amount for distribution is over £SOO. The Sub-committee took every care to inquire into the circumstances of each party affected by the accident, and after a good deal of thought they were unanimous that the funds should be distributed as follows : "C. Campbell, £SO ; Kennedy, £3O ; Miss Taylor, £SO; Mrs. Page, £100; Mrs. Mitchell, £2OO ; Mrs. Orr, £2OO. " The balance to be retained in the hands of the Committee until it be definitely learned whether or no John Orr recovers. The Committee to meet again in six months from date, and divide any balance as may be then and there determined. " Adopted at a meeting of the Committee, held at the Star and Garter Hotel, 17th June, 1876. "John Main, "Chairman." Mr. John Locke proposed, and Mr. George Greenfield seconded, the adoption of the report.—Carried. It was resolved on the motion of Mr. ■Greenfield, seconded by Mr. F. Dunlop—"That cheques be drawn for the several sums forthwith, and that the balance be placed in the Bank as a fixed deposit for six months in the joint names of the Secretaries and Treasurer, and that the Manager of the Bank, of 'New Zealand be advised accordingly." .. ....... A vote of thanks" was passed to the pro-prietors-of The Evening-Mail and "North Otago Times,"-.for gratuitously inserting all advertisements in. connection with the Fund. Votes_ of thanks to- the Chairman, Committee,' Secretaries, and Treasurer, termi- , nated'the'proceedings.
