During the hearing of a ease in the Resident Mr.'_d«trate's Court at Invereargill recently. Mr. Waddeil. whose experience of matters appertaining to stock has been extensive, stated that an almost infallible way Co tlr--cover tridbtinet i>rands on cattle or horses was to bathe the parts about the region of the bratid until the skin or hide got heated, tiy tit:- means the brand would be made to stand out in dbt::wtrie>.s.

At Timant there lives i>n« John HeiHy, whoso esee.-.-dve t.iyalfey has led him to issue a challenge t»> the proprietor of the local
•" Herald," in the leading columns of which it was said :— *' If her Majesty were to tell a sweep to pick up her umbrella, he would he perfectly justified in refusing." After expressing the opinion that titc editor would never he called upon to do any sueh thing. he writes) to the proprietor:—"l call upon you as a gentleman (and a soldier, I believe) to give titer name of the party who wrote so slightingly. disgracefully, and insultingly, of her Majesty. In common with many ethers I feet the insult ottered to the Throne and to the People. I have to apprise you that unless the author of the obnoxious* article, as stated tit the leading article, is given, or an open disavowal of the statements therein expressed is given, the matter will not be allowed to rest here."
If people who are recovering from scarlet fever (says a Victorian paper) have not .sense enough to stay away from church, it will soon become a question whether it would not be wiser to close them for a short time. It is a positive fact that a very religious man, who is only just recovering from the disease, went to one of our churches, and was innocently proceeding to occupy his seat when he was espied by one of the officers of the church. Even when the impropriety of his conduct was pointed out to him, he couldn't see it : but. as the church officer was imperative, the man and his disease had to retire. Messrs. Gtsborne, Seed, and Knowles are (the "' Post " writes) still pursuing their inquiries at the Provincial offices. It appears that they require to be furnished with a complete list of the Provincial Government officers ; also, age, length of service, and rate
of salary iu each case. This return jnll take some time to prepare, as inquiries will require to be sent to various parts of the Province. The ages of the officers are evidently ■wanted as data on which to base the amount of compensation to be given in case of discharge. It is quite evident (says the "News") that in all town? of any size the gasworks should be municipal property, as is the case at Invercargill. At Timaru the people are beginning to realise the evils attendant upon lotting such works fall into the hands of a private company, and although the town has only been lighted a few months there are loud complaints about the prices charged. The "Timaru Herald *' suggests that an Act should be passed restricting the profits of g;w companies to 10 per cent., and providing that any profit above that rate shall go in reduction of the price of gas.
On Sunday forenoon, according to the •'Herald," a seal was noticed on the beach in Caroline 13ay, and several persons at once proceeded to stalk in the most approved manner. Armed with miniature boulders, they crept up until within a few feet of the unfortunate animal, and then made a general nidi, heaving the boulders at its head. The seal, however, would doubtless have escaped into deep water had not one enterprising individual, at the sacrifice of dry feet and tmiuicrs, seized it by the tail and hung on like grim death until further assistance was rendered, when the animal was dragged up on to the bank, and stoned to death. It is between five ami six feet long, and one of the ordinary grey species.
