MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last night. Present ; His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Falconer, Galbraith, Sinclair, and Scott. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Corporation Solicitor, stating that in his opinion Mr. James Grave had committed a breach of the building regulations in erecting an iron building on his property without the consent of the Council. On the motion of Councillor Falconer, seconded by Councillor Sinclair, it was resolved, " That the Inspector of Nuisances be requested to take proceedings against Mr. Grave, under the direction of the Corporation Solicitor, re breach of Building Regulation No. 3."
From Mr. Lemon, on behalf of the Vestry of St. Luke's Church, applying for permission to construct a drain-box under the footpath in Tees-street, to carry the storm water off the Church property. Permission granted. Several letters were read applying for permission to have certain sections, which were dealt with by the Council. From the Provincial Under-Secretary, ar follows :
"Province of Otago, New Zealand. '' Provincial Secretary's Office, " Dunedin, 17th May, 1876. " Sir, —I have been directed to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 24th April, 1870, on the subject of sly-grog selling, and to acquaint you that the Commissioner of Police has been consulted, but is unable to advise his Honor the Superintendent as-to what should be done to check the evil, save by additional legislation, and with that view his Honor has brought the matter under the notice of the General Government. " I am to add that his Honor has agreed to extend to Oama.ru the provisions of the Common Lodging House Ordinance, 1802, and its Amendment, 1864, which, it is thought, will be sufficient for the present requirements. 11 1 have the honor to be, >Sir, "Your obedient servant, '• Alex. Willis, " Under-Secretary. The Town Clerk, Oainaru. mox laiip posts. Designs of iron lamps, with prices attached, were submitted to the Council by several firms in Dunedin and Oamaru, and it was resolved that they be referred to the Gas Works Committee, to report thereon. .-• FvBPOKT OF GAS VvOKKS COMMITTEE. The following report was read : " Mr. Courtis having stated that it was absolutely necessary he - should have an
engine at the gas-works, he wawuthorised. to procure a gas-engine from ~3'lelbouriiej as speedily as possible." On the motion of Councillor the report was adopted. REPORT FROM TOWN SURVEYOR. A report from the above re the drainage of Wansbeck-street, and other works, was read, and ordered to lie on the table till next meeting ; and the members of tlie Public Works Committee were requested to report thereon at the next meeting. PUBLIC HEALTH COMMITTEE. Councillor Galbraith requested that further time be allowed the Committee to ; prepare a report on the subject of the formation of the Council into a Local Board of Health. ACCOUNTS. Several accounts were passed for pay. ment. and the Council adjourned at 9.15.
