Nigal Blair Springs A Surprise (From "N.Z. Truth's" Wellington Rep.) NIGAL. BL.AIR, the popular skipper of the old Wellesley n, sprang a' complete surprise m the third of Welling- ■ ton's Sanders Cup trials. While "Mic" Crawford m the Clyde was staging a blanketing race with the \ Betty, he cleared right away, to round the first mark twenty seconds ahead of the Clyde, which was admirably suited by the light breeze, but again her new skipper failed to impress. . His judgment m carrying a crew of four was all astray. Neil Rowntree, her old general, would have slathered the field m the light stuff, and he must have wept to have seen the poor exhibition by his old favorite. . The Betty was a certainty beaten. \\ hjskipper Johnston elected, to take off- Ins leader m favor of a working, jib is r hard to fathom. On the long tack, to bhelly Bay she appeared to be anchored and all the field, with the exception of the Idono, which was also minus a leader, \ forged ahead. : ! At this stage the Wellesley (I appeared to have the race m the bag, . and Nigal made no mistake over the concluding stages to score a welldeserved and most popular win. His leader and the light crew, comprised Of Cliff ITolliS and Ken Wilson, did the trick. They are a good combination, and the old boat- went like a bird. I It looked to "Truth" as though Johnston was trying to win without a loader.
