Omatere's Mast Goes Over (From "N.ZY Truth's" Auckland Rep.) "THE Yachting season opened on Satur--1 day under poor conditions] seven clubs holding combined races, but the big boats were missed. A fresh westerly kept all the' crews with their hands full, and. there were one or two mild sensations. When leading m the 26-foot class, Omatere set her spinnaker shortly after the start, and just as it filled to the breeze, her mast carried away close .to the deck. Practically m the same place, Maratea got into trouble m the M class race, and capsized. Another casualty was the T class boat. Rita T, which got caught m a squall and filled when crossing the line on completion of the first round. . There was no racing, for the A and B class keelers, and only a few of the smaller keel boats competed m the C and F. class. The 22-footers put up the best contest of the day— Only three boats put m ah appearance m the* M class race, and the accident to Maratea knocked the bottom out of the contest. Manene and Mawhiti, however boxed on, .the former getting the verdict m a keen finish. In the V and S class, Avro and Wild Wave had a great set-to before Avro got its nose m. front at the finish. , Six ,of the Cornwell Cup- class. boats showed the right spirit by gamely taking their chance under the conditions ruling. Mcc Too showed a clean pair of heels to the rest of the class, Kitty sailing a useful second. Fay had it on them all m the T, X and V class, and. although Betty showed up well at times, Fay had a bit m hand at the finish.
