GOING STRONG
Old Mare Is Still OnJDeck SECOND. CUP WIN THOUGH at an age when most mares A have been retired from the race track, Celerity II showed her younger rivals that she could still shake a merry leg by winning the Winton Cup for. the. second time, her pi-evious winning effort being m 1927. After being fired m both front legs and turned out for some months, she was ' recommissioned about three months ago and got ready for the Gore Cup m which she ran third behind Salmo Salar and High Court. Only for being unlucky m the running she might easily have won. Seeing this was her first race since last January, it was a fine effort, and sbe was. confidently expected for the Winton j Cup. • The Chisholm cash was m and the mare did the rest, but she must be
deemed lucky as only for striking a good run on the fence at the turn for home she would not have got the prize. Bert Ellis, on top, being too quick for the other hoops, seized the opportunity first, and the break he got was just enough to carry her home first down the shortostraight. /' It is astonishing that Jim Rowlands can pop up with this mare year after year, and always collect some cash with her. • . Being now nine years old, great credit must be given her trainer^ for being able to bring her back, and to hold her form so long. She looks just as well now as ever she did, and vHth the southern cir.cuit commencing at the end of next month she has every opportunity of tapping the till again.
