DON'T DO IT!
Keep Your Foot Off Clutch Pedal CORRECT THE EVIL The clutch is generally the most ill-used piece of mechanism of the whole car. How often does one I hear the rasping of gears because of the incorrect application of the clutch. THE clutch assembly and crankshaft unit of a car is generally incorporated m the fly-wheel, and serves the purpose of engaging or disengaging the engine with the gear-box and back wheels. The majority of clutches are known' as dry clutches because the friction faces run dry and do not require lubrication, the exception to this rule being m cars such as the Hudson and the Essex. These machines have clutches designed for internal lubrication, and it is important m such instances to supply oil or a mixture of oil and kerosene to the internal portion m accordance with the makers' instructions. Practically ali clutches, however, do require lubrication to the clutch-release mechanism, where considerable wear takes place if the lubrication is neglected. ' The clutch-release mechanism is only subject to wear when the clutch pedal is depressed while the engine is m motion, and it is important that drivers do not make a practice of driving with the foot resting on the pedal. The practice of de-clutching while the machine is running, and also of driving with the foot on the pedal are two common faults found among mo- I torists. They are evils that should be I corrected. ■ The practice of running with the foot on the pedal inevitably occasions unnecessary work and wear on the clutch mechanism. j Your car is a perfect example of the engineer's work. Treat it reasonably well and its working life will be doubled.
