Grecian Gilt
BRINGS BACON
AT Masterton last month Grecian ir% - was a very unlucky horse m the hig: handicap of the day, and it was only a question of his getting a good track to earn his bran mash. Trentham was no good to him and after he had a race on opening day at Riccarton he was the gentleman for the job. The second day he was runner-up to Don Jose, both of which were re-

sponsible for fine efforts from the false rail. Then on- the third day he won. v Bert Morris, who had been doing, a month's penance, had his first mount, and that he had not lost the key he showed by kicking Grecian home, m front of Don Jose and Beau Geste. That was over a mile and. a-quarter, m a good solid crowd, hut on Saturday he registered his best performance to date. ■-.: He was a runner m the Cressy, and he^ had to meet the second' class open sprinters over seven furlongs. Most everybody thought that he was more solid than brilliant, and for this reason his price was right, but Grecian showed that each race was making him better. He gave them a start over the last three furlongs, and, finishing with great determination, had it won fifty yards off the post. There were apparently some "iffy" supporters on the trainers' stand for The Pig, as he is known, was watched very keenly by one party, which, when Grecian started to make his run, kept on informing Moroney "He's home, 'Snow." Moroney is a very patient man i with his horses, and since he has been' directing the Elgar team he has won more than his share, and now he has moulded Grecian into a horse which looks capable of winning one of the season's best handicaps.
