TI|E originators of the scheme were ■I women bf practical common sense . <|van&' much kindliness of heart who, having known of the organisation called ; ,- I'Usef ul WcHnen" m/ London, yyere /anxibus- ... to 'found a similar fedciety m Christchurch. ; '"When illness or any sudden emergency Visits' the home, extra i assistance of some sort is necessary^ where can .. assistance be obtained'? The Home Service can do it, for one of its main objects is to bring together the harassed and over-burden-ed mother and the good, homely, sensible woman who can give the needed help sympathetically and well. The- association can send at short notice reliable, honest and trustworthy workers who will carry out iall sorts and kinds of duties—housekeeping, nursing, .-, sewing, mending, /darning, readirig'to' and caring for the elderly people, taking charge of home and children m the parents' absence. There are -those who will undertake daily .work, ' such as washing and 'cleaning, and these are the '■■ vwbmen who are .. , m- • : valuable at sprtng cleaning tinae. The, Home Service workers are of proved-ability for housework, nursing

Women of small ' nteansi-':-. whose own family no. longer needs their Undivided attention, ; are glad and thankful to do some part-time work m a home where "an extra pair of hands is needed. So with the daughter who. has tended her parents m their old age, and then is left alone with only limited means; she is glad to have ""employment m suitable and congenial surroundings, and comes to Home Service to find first t&& position she seeks. Many ahd various are the calls that come to the /Home Service, and. the secretary- endeavors to find the right person for the Ispecial" requirement.
