Avondale Will Witness Return of
Good Horses
VISITING SECTION IS POWERFUL (From "N.Z. Truth ? s ' ' Special Auckland Representative.) With horses of the calibre of Star Stranger, Historic, Seatown, Panther, Mendip, Paddon, Eager Rbs.e, Prodice and True Blood engaged, the Avondale Cup will attract big attention.
THE roomy track has probably appealed to the connections, of Star . Stranger and Historic, both of which appear to do best where they can hit out with some freedom. . Regarding Star Stranger, he is not usually looked for to be at his bestv so early .m the season, but nevertheless his presence acts as an additional attraction. : For that reason it is good to see his name figuring m the list.
The load of poundage he has earned makes his job hard, but he usually figures prominently among the northern handicap class, whether he actually wins or not.
Historic will not come north this trip accompanied by the same boom which followed his Winter Cup. victory
of last season, but , that attention will focus particularly on -his prospects is certain after his treble success m big handicaps up north.' . - He won the Avondale and Mitchel-. son Cups, last spring, besides taking the ' Grandstand Handicap at Ellerslie, and these performances alone will tend tb keep. 'Auckland eyes on his every movement and condition until the actual day. Seatown's placed performances at the last Great Northern fixture under I welter imposts make him a worthy nominee while the tracks are still on the soft- side, and m this connection Prodice, though without recent racing, would be a distinct hope among the northerners engaged if anywhere near fit. ' it will be remembered- she 'made a gallant jfight against Historic for the stake last spring. - Paddon, Mendip and Panther should throw some line on their prospects when racing m the middle of the island before, the day, while True Blood, High Pitch, Eager Rose, Desert Glow, Nassock and ' Maori Boy are at their best all capable of proving reasonable opposition over ten furlongs. Some of the others engaged are on the downward slide, with increasing 'years, while yet others have been tried and cai^ be risked when it comes to the bitter end of ten furlongs. All things considered, the- class engaged is better than generally expected, and this year's Avondale Cup should resolve itself into a real contest, y • '''■'..'■■ There are sufficient good handicap horses engaged to' keep m- • terest m the event until its decision.
