LEADERS DOWNED

Diamonds Play Like Champions (From "N.Z. Truth's" Wellington Rep.) p LINKING football was played by Diamonds m their Auld Memorial Cup defeat of Waterside on Saturday and the blacks shaped like the really good side they are, holding the Wharfles down, and giving them something to go on with. Their win against the championship leaders showed that the spell which has come to them has done Diamonds good, and also unsettled the Waterside combination, with the result that the destination of the championship is -as uncertain as ever. , •Waterside, with most of their games gone, (they have only one to play), will be hard put to it to keep fit for the final encounter, while Diamonds will have another .useful gallop m the semi-final of the contest. ' The fine Diamonds right-wing, staffed by the McLeods, was the arrowhead of the blacks' attack, and from that" side came long crosses ' and high centres which often had the losers guessing. Either Hospital were not keen to add more trophy matches to the long string of championship games which now await them (they are three behind), or 1 the enforced spell has thrown them out of their stride, for though they were unlucky m going down to Marist 3-1, the old Hospital side would never have suffered defeat at the hands of such a team. Marist are a much stronger proposition now than they were earlier m the season and appear to have kept up their training, but they are not a championship prospect, while Hospital very definitely are. . ' The win, of course, was wider than it should have been, for Hospital should have got another goal, but it was a win nevertheless, and cannot /be explained away. • " v Petone, however, showed that there will be no beg pardons about the Chatham Ciip final., for they held and whacked the brisk young Seatoun side very decisively. . The villagers, of course,' have set their mind on the cruiser trophy, as they did m the first year of their existence, and ' have made a wonderful difference to their team by consistent training and the . spell [from solid football.
