PompeiusWaiNotße Left Behind (From "N.Z.- Truth's" Auckland Rep.) JUST when Pompeius is going to have a serious jumping career mapped out for him is troubling northern punters. , ■ He is getting up m years and now figures on the race-card as ah aged gelding, and few horses retain their pace after passing the middle-stage. A real chance may be missed with ' Pompeius if. delayed too long for the ' jumping business. ■:.'■■ He certainly more than paid for his upkeep. last season by reason of victories at flat racing, but apart from ' his Rotorua Cup triumph his successes were maint ly achieved m the hack class. I HoAvever, he is hardly top-notch as a 5 flat performer, though there is no doubting the fact that his effort for - second from the reai- m the Jellicoe r Handicap last Saturday was worth taking note of. • > More so if he is to tackle jumping 3 events before he tires of the race-path. [ It may not be too late next winter I to extend Pompeius his real oppor- . tuhity to shine m the jumping field, . but it must be remembered that he is ageing all the time, and with too much I racing the best of horses sour of the I game. It is quite possible to place Pompeius : to effect at flat racing, but for a Hunt Cup Steeplechase winner with his slow beginning fault, the jumping field seems his right place. . TARQUINTUS, the Night Raid three•- -• ' year-old m Bill Hobbs's stable, is m work again and looks m great heart.
