HEMLINES
Dame Fashion Has Been Beaten THOSE, who hope to keep the hem- *• lines up are battling against a force no less powerful than gravity, since Madame, Grundy says hemlines shall be no less than a hand's" length below the knee. . \ There is greater freedom m waistlines, which have ho restricted area, and while the newest and smartest are "short," yet many still cling about the hip's. !■■ Waistlines are marked more by Mousing m the, back . v and fitting m front than *by the ibelt. But to return to the hemlines, the long sl^irt has fought a losing battle with its short opponent, and won on points! If all we hear is true, the uneven — and untidy — hemline vanished with the first days of summer on the Continent. T*he efforts on the part of Dame Fashion to thrust upon women something they di^d not like have received a severe set-back. , It is not often that Dame Fashion loses, for she has a huge following which blindly do her bidding— even to the detriment of their appearance. But the Short versus / Long Skirt war was waged on broader grounds really, for it introduced the elements Known as. comfort and utility. There were also those thrilling little hot-point talks— and screeds — emanating from learned professors and medicos, who made no bones about telling us of the - horrid little microbes that appear to spend their whole lives lying m wait for a long skirt! Dame Fashion has been beaten, and while she may make another attempt to get her own way, with a few who can afford to bow to her decree — and collect microbes — most of us will be quite content if we be allowed to- wear an ordinarily decent- length skirt. There are five disadvantages with the long .skirt that women are not -likely to overlook. It. is more difficult to wear, it makes her look older, It is unhygienic and takes' more material — which costs money!
