FOR CHAMP. REGATTA

Rowing

Hamilton Will Take Senior Fours

i (From ''N.Z. Truth's" Bowing Corres- [ pondent;) f -In the light of ' the Wellington 1 Regatta last Saturday, some -definite ' line can be drawn on the form, of . crews entering for the National ' Championships at Plcton this week- " end. ; • : . i 1 WJELLINQTON Regatta was something W in the nature of a try-out for the *" championships, as crews from Hamilton, Wanganui, Canterbury and Blenheim t Competed. For Saturday's big event some of last / year's stars are missing. The Halybur- ■ ton-Johnstone Cup and the interprovincial eights to be held m the north next * month is apparently, the aim of crews from the south, for Otago lacks repreJ eentation at the championships. The big event has dropped down to] three, Blenheim, Union (Wanganui), and Otago are absent, and Hamilton, Picton and Wairau alone remain to fight ! .out the traditional event. By winning the senior fours at Taurariga on Boxing ' Day and at Hamilton on January 29, and also the senior fours at Wellington Re•gatta on Saturday, the Hamilton crew have a secure hold on the "Old Rooster." Picton, however, have kept this year's race well m mind. Joe. Riddell, exMayor of the town, took the hat round and collected £120 for the purchase of a jnew boat. It is miles ahead of the last io -year-old tub. „ Jackson (stroke), and Olsson (No. 3), are a couple of massive men who never know when they are licked. They have looked after . themselves this year, and with Barney Wilson and B. Schmanski, No. 2 and bow, they will prove a much stlffer proposition for Hamilton. , Wairau have lost the services of Hegglun, Saunders, Gibbons and' Sutherland for this year's race, thus leaving the club In a difficult position. The present crew lacks weight and experience and will finish up many lengths behind. Hamilton Picton, will fight out a great race all Ijhe way, with Hamilton winning , probably m record time. ■. The champion sculls should prove- the classic of the day. Jerry St. Clair and Molesworth (Hamilton), are weil-known absentees. The race will be fought out t>y Jackson, W. Turner and C. Haua. These three competed at Wellington, and at the championships. Should finish m same order. - . - ■ ' ■ j The race last year was remarkable for the performance of W. Turner — he just won by the skin of Ms teeth from Jackeon, after catching two crabs. Hamilton will have two crews entered m the champion pairs event, but possibly only one will compete. , Cooke (Star, Wellington), .Is without Williams, his bow of last year, but he has a good substitute m Mullins. They were unfortunate last Saturday when competing against Sandor and Bayly of Hamilton. Gibbons and Saunders (Wairau), haye been specialising m the pair-boat. They should be better this year than last. /Their work lacks direction, but should this improve they'll take a lot of catching, being very fast off the. mark. . Whichever crew Hamilton starts, they (will prove a stiff proposition, knowing as they do the Picton course. The placings probably, will be Hamilton 1, Wairau 2, and Star 3. For the champion double sculls there Is a field of five. Jackson and Quaile, of Union (Wanganui), winners for the past two years, appear to be unbeatable. Again Jerry St. Clair and Molesworth are missing. It will be a very interesting .race m view of the fact that Tauranga are rowing their two scullers, Turner and pE-laua. .. . -•..■•■-:
