Whispers From Wanganui
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Wanganui Rep.) THE. Wanganui Cup meeting next week gives every indication of proving a big success. The going promises to be m wonderful order — thanks to the quantity of rain experienced. * # * The Rangitikei Club will race earlier than usual this season, March 5 and 6 being the dates chosen. The Cup will be worth £250 and T. H. Duncan is donating a silver cup to go to the" owner of the winner. * # # If Charlie O'Connor is not 'available it is probable W. C. Price will do the starting at the Wanganui meeting. His good work at Trentham shows that he knows his job all right. #. # * Cadland will take a power of beating m his Wanganui engagements— provided th^re is no recurrence of his bleeding trouble. ** * ' The Wanganui course suits Free- . hold, and he should make things ; interesting m the Flying next week. * * # It is pleasing to know that Pomp's damaged legs are improving, and it is hoped that he will be able to race again next season. * # # Star Area might stage a "comeback" at Wanganui. His form so far this season ' has been disappointing, but M. Gardner has hopes that the Acre gelding will make amends before the season ends. #■ '.■■#■ * The Jackson Stakes is likely to be contested by a select field next week. There may. not • be many starters, but they will be good ones. Paganelli, Cimabue and Tenterden are - three which are v likely to meet. ■ * • # '. ■ * ; Mask, Ceremony, and Drastic are back m Rayner's stable after having had spells m the paddock. ■* * * Mask has been out for some six months, and is very burly on it, but he appears to be quite sound. If he goes on all right he Avill probably be taken to Auckland for the Great Nor- , them meeting, which will be the first at which he will be seen out. .. ••-.#• .....#. # The six weeks' spellwhich Ceremony has had has done him good. He has put on a good deal of condition, but should bel ready to race at the Auckland Easter meeting. It is to be hoped this brilliant customer will get back to his best form. * # * After the Wanganui meeting W. Rayner will make a start on three young fillies, two bred to English time and one by Limond — Pennon which came to light a day too soon and will have to race as a three-year-old when only two. * # * Eleven have been left m the Jackson Stakes, to be run on the second day of the Wanganui meeting, but three or four will probably drop out. However, if Paganelli, Lady Quex, Cimabue, Tenterden and Chrysology go to the post there will be material enough for a splendid race.
