AMOUNIS TOO BIG FOR GAY BALLERINA*

BIG MONEY GOES ASTRAY

Crown Area "Saved Up" but Good Thing Came Undone

GREENLINE TOPS . NEWMARKET

(By Cable— From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Sydney Representative) That a good big one will always beat a good little one was never better exemplified than at Rosehill'last Saturday, when Gay Ballerina; was easily defeated, by Amounis over a. mile, m the Rosehill Stakes, run at weight-for-age.

THE little New Zealand-bred mare struggled on every inch, but Amounis simply toyed with her all the way down the running. Most racegoers thought Gay Ballerina's condition would enable her to defeat Amounis, but the latter, renowned as a first-upper, was never off the bit. ■ New Zealanders will remember how Amounis downed Paganelli over six at his first attempt after a spell. Gesto made his weight-for-age debut m the same race and finished fourth m a field of five. The chestnut is a first-class handicapper, but no classic performer. Saved up for months, Crown Area, now m Booth's stable, was backed sensationally, the stable placing £3000 on the gelding.

Like most pickled prads, Crown. Area bumped something of chillie variety m the country mare, Urunaway, which beat the big fellow by two lengths. It was the first time for nearly six months that Crown Area was genuinely backed. Joy King had an outing m the same race, but was not m the betting. He finished on strongly m eighth position. For the Newmarket, Greenline > (considered the best Australasian sprinter) has been awarded 10.2, four pounds m. excess of Amounis. Aussie, which now looks well after a spell, has 9.8 and Commendation 9.3. A poor lot figure m the Australian Cup, but the .race never attracts topnotchers.
