VNOWING that his employer, Wing Fung, a Chinese market-gardener, ** was m the habit of leaving money m his house, James Bertie Stewart opened a window, m Fung's absence, climbed m and abAracted £7/10/- from a trousers pocket. Later, he pleaded guilty, m the Auckland Magistrate's Court, through Mr. Noble, to stealing the money,, a charge of breaking and . entering being reduced. In a statement he made to the police, Stewart said that he took the money and went to the trots. / \ "He must have given jt a go," said Chief- detective Hammond. • "None of the cash is left. Stewart has been convicted before of theft on four occasions and once of false pretences." "He has an excellent war record," said Mr. Noble, "and took part m the retreat from Mons. The war may have affected his sense 1 of right and wrong." Counsel made an application for probatjon. "No, I can't grant that," decided Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., "but I will take his war record into consideration and halve the usual sentence.
