TT is said that m every ,gaol there' is found a certain type of prisoner who. takes up the role of prison "lawyer." • -•' ' Paparua. is no exception, and it was through the "advice" given by a fellow-prisoner that Edwards . Gillespie, a young man serving a sentence of 18 months obtained a free trip to Dunedin. -When served m the prison with papers m connection with an affiliation claim, Gillespie intimated to the authorities that he> was not the father and that he would defend the case. He was brought to Dunedin, but when he came before Mr. H. W. Bundle, S.M., Gillespie stated that he would admit,' parentage. When asked by the Magistrate why he had first of all . denied responsibility for an illegitimate child, he declared that a 1 fellow-prisoner had advised him to' dp so. Put on oath to formally consent to an order, Gillespie said that he was' a married man, having been married- In Timaru m 1926. ■fchree months after the marriage, lie said, he and his wife mutually agreed to let, "her go her own way and he to go his." An order was made accordingly, a proportionate amount to be deducted from his weekly earnings while m gaol. -
