Not wishing, .tp pay the poll tax Yee Chuck took out a permit to remain m New Zealand for six months,' but, at the . expiration of that term, he had disappeai-ed.: . '.:'■. i Two years later, under the name of Sang Hop, he was arrested m connection, with opium smoking charges, and it was then learned that he was not a naturalised New Zealander. ( .. . Yee Chuck went'- to prison m connection with these • offences, and was later brought up on the other charge. The Immigration Department pressed for punishment, as it was v mentioned that there were several Chinese m the country who had not paid their poll tax. If a penalty were placed on one of them it would act as a deterrent to others who wished 'to come here to live, but did riot have the authority to. do so. Yee Chuck was' sentenced to three months' imprisonment, to commence after the term he is now serving has expired, after which he is to be de-" ported.
