ONE, of the finest collections of rhododendrons south of the line is !. m the possession of James Speden, of Gore. The liberal acreage surrounding his home has many fine specimens of New Zealand flora, but the shrubs, specimens of which have been collected from all parts of the world, make the most arresting display. Speden has attained high rank as an authority on horticulture. He -can talk for hours on his hobby and not repeat -himself. 1 *. On many trips, he has searched mountain and plain for the unique m vegetation, and his pen has produced numerous papers on his chosen subject. For him the call of the wild is an irresistible one, but he has proved that the gay things of field and mountain can also flourish m domesticity.
