Coyle Unwinds A Grievance

CTRONG exception to a charge of being an incorrigible rogue was ** voiced by Roger James Coyle m the Auckland Magistrate's Court. j When ask«d to plead, Coyle shouted: "When are the police and 'D.V going to stop persecuting me?" "When you start doing some work," replied Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. "I've never had a fair go m this town; I'm always being hounded down," exclaimed Coyle at the top of his voice. "I've never taken anyone down m my life." ■ ' , Eventually Mr. Hunt had to intervene. "Remanded for three days for medical observation," he ord«red. "Now take him siway." During his remand someone must have strongly impressed upon Coyle the futility of raving at the court procedure, for when he again appeared he was painstakingly polite, "How do you plead?" asked the clerk. "Yo.u'll pardon;. me, your gentleman worship" began CoyJe. "Look here," exclaimed Mr. Hunt, "answer one question, are you guilty or not guilty?." -• . . . "I'm certainly not guilty. I'm no rogue nor a vagabone either." Captain Holmes, 8.A., gave Coyle quite a good character. "He has plenty of candor, your Worship. You can see the best and the worst at the same time m him, but he is truthful and works well when he has it." . "All right," decided Mr. Hunt, "I'll convict and order you to come up for sentence within six months if you go to the Army."
