THE YOUNGER ELEMENT EXCEL
Bowls
THE strenuous ; tussle is a memorable one for two reasons, 'that' this combination of players were superior to the redoubtable opponents m that they gave a wonderful exhibition of the pure drawing game and showed a clear dominence of the younger element m the sport over the older. There were no fireworks about their play. From the commencement of the tournament to the final game they drew steadily and persistently, making their opposition fight continuously for key position on the heads. Young . Jim Gardiner is a particularly graceful exponent m the art and his excellent knowledge of the game should carry him far m bowling. Last season he was successful m skipping the rink that became the runners-up for the same event, only being defeated for the final honor by Muston's Auckland team. Ken. Lippiatt, as number three, always has been considered a player of outstanding merit, and has further- added to his reputation. A mead of , praise should be accorded the play of Harry Sykes as number two for the team. He-was consistent and accurate throughout, drawing beautifully, not only one bowl but more frequently two shots on the many heads throughout the .many games m the contest. COLLECT HONORS IN NORTHERN TUSSLE
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Representative.)
Despite, the fact | that quite a number of teams of exceptional strength from the 22 clubs contesting, entered, the culminating honors of the Auckland Centre's champion of champion' rink tournament were annexed by the splendid bowling of T. Cook, H. Sykes, K. Lippiatt, J. Gardiner, of the Otahuhu C{.ub. .
many/ redoubtable opponents m this very important position m the full rink game. The team deserves every credit for their performance. The runners-up, too, J. Sinclair, A. Watson, W. Cox, F. J. H. Elllsdon', of the Devonport Club, were remarkable for good bowling, although not pulling ■ off the flnal^honors. Freddy Elllsdon is an old Auckland bowler and staged a great come-back In the tourney. In the final game, bearing the weight of his team's work, it was; hardly to be expected that he could make the grade against the strong opposition. .He had, too, much to do, although he got within striking distance of a win on the semifinal head. . . Fifty-five teams, inclusive of some of the best players In the Dominion, have entered the first Rotorua ' tournament, commencing next Monday. Norrie Bell's Hamilton rink which won the c.vent last season, has not entered on this occasion. A team headed by Dick Harrison, the prominent Australian" bowler,' was the runner-up on that occasion. Strangely enough Jim Gardiner, who- played so well In the recent Auckland tournament, was number two for Harrison then. The tournament Is one of the most brilliant In the long list of excellent provincial events.
